Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Degree
The B.F.A. is a highly specialized degree that integrates rigorous coursework with experiential learning to develop students' professional competencies and portfolio. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum and sustained faculty mentorship, students apply theoretical knowledge in practice as they collaborate with faculty and professional guest artists in the creation of plays and musicals. Comprising four distinct concentrations—acting, musical theatre, design & technology, and stage management—the B.F.A. provides conservatory-level training grounded in the liberal arts tradition that defines a Mary Washington education.
Prospective acting and musical theatre students seeking admission to the B.F.A. program are required to complete an audition and interview. Applicants to the design/technology and stage management concentrations must submit a portfolio for faculty review and participate in an interview. Upon admission, students fulfill the 120 credit hours required for the degree, with specific requirements varying by concentration. The program also welcomes transfer applicants, who are evaluated through audition, portfolio review, and interview as appropriate to their area of study.
