Student Learning Outcomes
1. Contribute to the science of nursing by identifying disparities, formulating research questions, integrating scientific findings to create evidence based solutions to nursing problems in one’s specialty area of practice.
2. Advance the profession by demonstrating best practices in leadership and articulate standards that incorporate systems-based thinking that benefits quality and safety of patient outcomes.
3. Integrate specialty knowledge and skills unique to one’s area of advanced nursing practice to deliver safe, high-quality care to diverse populations thereby facilitating human flourishing.
4. Model excellence as a nursing leader who effects needed change in one’s specialty area of practice and helps shape a preferred future for nursing and healthcare.

Admission Requirements for the M.S.N. Program
Admissions Requirements for the MSN program at UMW are that the applicant must:
- Have an unencumbered RN license in the state in which the student intends to complete clinical placement;
- Have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a program nationally accredited in nursing, and regionally accredited college or university;
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale in undergraduate study;
- Provide one satisfactory academic recommendation;
- Provide one satisfactory professional recommendation from a nurse leader who has worked with the student;
- Provide a resume or curriculum vitae;
- Complete an interdisciplinary interview, if requested;
- Complete an application;
- Show documentation of Clear Child Abuse Record and Clear Criminal Background Check;
- Show documentation of completion of all required vaccinations, or titer immunity, and a physical exam which documents free of contagious diseases; and
- Have a current American Heart Association CPR Adult, Child, Infant and AED Certification.
(These criteria will help to ensure that the selected candidates possess the credentials needed to enter the clinical facilities and provide care to patients and clients.)
Following an initial vetting of applications by University Admissions, an admissions committee that includes the Director of the Program, and full-time faculty within the BSN and MSN programs, will evaluate these documents.
All courses within the program are required. Students electing to apply transfer credits toward their degree must consult with the Director of Nursing for approval. Transfer coursework can be applied to courses in the required tracks, but transfer courses will not be used to substitute for core coursework.
